Introduction to Sailing
Two Hour Sail
What a great way for prospective sailors with no previous sailing experience to discover the fun of sailing. Enjoy a two hour sail with an instructor and try your hand at sailing a sailboat acting as helmsman or crew. Bring a friend to share the experience.
Learn to Sail (Non-certification Course)
Two Day Course
This course is designed for the novice who wishes to get a solid foundation and a level of confidence before advancing to the more intensive certification courses. Learn to sail a 30' sailboat in light winds and sea conditions in familiar waters under supervision. The course covers seamanship, tacking, jibing, sailing all points of sail, nautical terminology and safety. Serves as a prerequisite for ASA 101 or simply a fun weekend learning to sail!
Basic Keelboat Sailing (ASA 101)
Two Day Course
This is the foundation course for the new sailor and is designed for maximum on the water training in basic sailing skills and knowledge. You will learn the terminologies and seamanship required for the basic sailor. On the water, you will master maneuvering the sailboat in all points of sail while performing helmsman duties and following the sailing "rules of the road". Upon completion, the new sailor will have the confidence to get underway, sail desired courses and maneuvers and return his/her vessel safely to the dock.
Basic Coastal Cruising (ASA 103)
Two Day Course
This is the follow-on course to ASA 101 and will take the new sailor beyond basic sailing and teach the skills which are more in-depth for the cruising skipper. The knowledge of cruising terminology, required equipment, safety and accident prevention and weather planning will be learned. On the water, the new cruising sailor will perform proper sail selection, reefing, anchoring and person overboard procedures. In addition, navigation skills and chart interpretation will be introduced for local and regional cruising. Upon completion, the new sailor will have the ability to cruise the local waters while he/she gains overall sailing experience.
Combination Basic Keelboat Sailing and
Basic Coastal Cruising (ASA 101 and ASA 103)
Basic Coastal Cruising (ASA 101 and ASA 103)
Four Day Course
Combining courses is a great way to get certified in two basic sailing courses at a significant discount (Save $250.00!). Please refer to the descriptions above for course content.
Challenge Certification for ASA 101 and/or ASA 103
These challenge courses provide an opportunity for the experienced captain to challenge the basic courses through written exam and hands-on performance testing with an instructor. No instruction will be provided and upon successful completion, an appropriate certification will be awarded. This course is designed for the self-taught sailor who may desire certification for his/her level of experience and to qualify for more advanced training such as Bareboat Charter and Advanced Coastal Cruising. Advanced courses may also be challenged if the applicant is qualified in the prerequisites and has the appropriate experience level for the challenged course.
Bareboat Chartering (ASA 104)
Three Day Course
This advanced course is established for a sailor with cruising experience on inland and coastal waters. The forty-eight hours (48) course requirements will take the sailors through cruise planning such as navigation, weather, safety and on-board systems. On the water, the sailors will perform hands-on operations such as maneuvering under power for docking, anchoring and navigating to the destination. All the subjects a cruising sailor needs to sail in his/her local waters or to enjoy a bareboat charter vacation in some exotic international location will be covered.
Combination Basic Coastal Cruising and
Bareboat Chartering (ASA 103 and ASA 104)
Bareboat Chartering (ASA 103 and ASA 104)
Five Day Course
Combining these courses will certify sailors in coastal cruising and prepare them for future bareboat chartering adventures. By combining courses you save $200.00. Please refer to the course descriptions above for course content.
Coastal Navigation (ASA 105)
Four Day Course
Taught in a classroom environment, this course will enable a skipper, sail or power, to apply navigation skills that are required to safely navigate on coastal and inland waters. The course takes the student through all elements of navigation such as use of navigation tools, nautical charts, reference publications, navigation aids and the bouyage system. The students will plot dead reckoning courses, plot bearings and fixes and apply the variables of tide, current and windage. This comprehensive course is presented in four (4) consecutive days or two (2) consecutive weekends. These classes are usually presented in the winter season but may be scheduled at other times on request.
Advanced Coastal Cruising (ASA 106)
Three Day Course
This advanced course is designed for the experienced sailor to enhance previously learned skills and to safely skipper a moderate to large vessel in various weather conditions. This is a thirty (30) hour course and requires a night sail. The course is usually taught on the applicant's vessel with the instructor on board. The sailors will learn sail trim for light to heavy sailing conditions as well as differences in sail shape and sail interaction. They will understand advanced weather planning, forecasts and cloud recognition. In addition, appropriate precautions to take in moderate to heavy wind and sea conditions will be covered. The sailors will navigate multi-leg courses and apply the principles covered in Coastal Navigation (ASA 105). Concurrently, they will apply all of their previous knowledge and sailing skills and develop comprehensive planning skills required for extended voyages.
